The Foundation was endowed with real estate assets and obtained legal status on June 22, 1977, through Presidential Decree No. 1189. The Foundation’s main activity consists of supporting the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Hemophilia and Thrombosis Cente of the Ospedale Maggiore (now IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico Foundation) and the University of Milan.

This activity is carried out through the awarding of scholarships to young Italian and international researchers, the development of laboratories and outpatient clinics, the provision of scientific equipment, and the promotion of important scientific studies.

The first goal the Foundation sought to achieve was the creation in Milan of a Medical Center where physicians and researchers could carry out their scientific and clinical activities in the specific field of hereditary coagulation disorders.

The Foundation therefore established a series of laboratories at the Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, equipped with the necessary furnishings and scientific equipment, which were then donated to the Hospital itself.

In turn, the Hospital named the Center after Angelo Bianchi Bonomi. Subsequently, the University Center bearing the same name was also created.

The Foundation sponsored two Chairs of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan and awarded a large number of scholarships, 207 in total, to Italian and international physicians and researchers from various parts of the world (Argentina, China, Colombia, India, England, Iran, Thailand, Turkey, Slovenia, Germany, and the Netherlands). In addition, 135 study awards were granted.

Since 1992, the Foundation has established an annual international award for young researchers for the best scientific research in the field of congenital coagulation disorders.

Since 2010, the Foundation has sponsored an international randomized study (SIPPET) conducted in 78 centers across 19 countries on five continents and published in 2016 in the New England Journal of Medicine, the world’s most prestigious medical journal. The study clearly demonstrated that therapy with plasma-derived factor VIII is associated with fewer anti-factor VIII antibodies than recombinant factor VIII.

Since 2012, the Foundation has supported the 3Winters-Ips study for the creation of a database of patients with Type 3 von Willebrand Disease, with the aim of investigating patient characteristics in relation to treatment responses.

On December 13, 2018, the Foundation and the Policlinico of Milan inaugurated the new Research Center in Via Pace, Milan, featuring 1,400 square meters of laboratories. From diagnosis to gene therapy, the Center is dedicated to the treatment of metabolic and rare diseases, together with the laboratories of the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Center for the treatment of hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases.

The Foundation’s ability, both past and present, to support the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Center is due both to its own financial resources and to the generous contributions of numerous companies, organizations, and individuals, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude.

The Foundation’s ability, both past and present, to support the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Center is due both to its own financial resources and to the generous contributions of numerous companies, organizations, and individuals, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude.

P.M.
